There's both a new 500D and 50D due soon so its probably worth waiting until those hit the streets. Also there's generally hacked firmwares you can get for the x00D series that add alot of the software features from the higher end models. The x0D series tend to be quite a bit heavier because of the alloy bodies, but are also more robust as a result too.

Hey. I'm no pro, but as someone who recently bought the 450D, it's pretty much got everything 40D has to offer, except for the large size.

There's no such thing as "a British accent"! There are dozens of different Scottish, English, Welsh and Northern Irish ones, though.

If you really want a bigger viewfinder, 450D or 500D don't really help, unlike 50D viewfinder which is really nice (I tried it for one day). For grip, it might be better to buy an additional grip. So, I would suggest 50D or 500D (depending on your budget). /me plans to wait for 60D to replace his 400D ;)

There will be a 500D soon with 1080p video recording and 15MP stills:
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos500d/
As another 350D owner, i'm tempted.

Go for the 500D. It's probably cheaper than the 40D, has bigger and (considerably) higher res viewfinder, takes better pictures in most cases (the only likely exception is if you take most pictures in ultra low lighting situation).

It also supports video (only other Canon DSLR which does so is the 5D Mark II).

So, my suggestion: go for the 500D. 40/50D are not worth the price increase.

If you *really* want to spend money, go straight to the 5D Mark II, but that is a fullframe already, you'll probably want to upgrade your lenses in this case.
